Peer feedback

Feedback from peers is just as effective and reliable as feedback from you, the lecturer (Cho et al., 2006). Additionally, peer-feedback helps students get more insight into the academic process (Nicol, Thomson & Breslin, 2014; Huisman et al. 2018) and improve their academic products (Huisman et al., 2019). And, ofcourse, it can help decrease the workload for you as a lecturer. As a lecturer though, you do need to provide clear instructions when using peer-feedback assignments. You can follow the tips from our hand-out to do so and use the peer-feedback module on the Science Skills Platform to help students provide effective peer-feedback.

Tools

Peer feedback can be used in class, with students engaging in discussion during class. More often, peer feedback is taking place outside of the classroom, where students can review the products of their peers and provide feedback in their own pace. Brightspace offers multiple tools to facilitate peer-feedback.

FeedbackFruits allows you to easily organize peer feedback for assignments in various forms, such as text, video or audio. The assignment can then be deployed during class or as an assignment for outside of class. A third option is to have the assignment done at home, but still give students the opportunity during lecture or workgroup to discuss the feedback received and ask for clarification if necessary.
If you want students to review videos (pitches or kennisclips) you can also use Pitch2Peer.
