Recalibration Groei and Bloei

The internal funding tools ‘Groei’ and ‘Bloei’ are currently subject to a recalibration. From their original setup, these tools are linked to the so-called profiling themes of our university. In the consultation on these themes, which was held at the end of 2024 among all university employees, our academic community advised, among other things, that the choice of profiling themes should not lead to internal divisions. This is a clear and important signal, which we want to take into account carefully, also for the implementation of Groei and Bloei. After all, these are meant to stimulate and connect, not to divide. That is why we are now re-examining how we can use the capacity and resources of Groei en Bloei as effectively as possible to foster a flourishing interdisciplinary research and teaching culture within the university. That process takes time, because we don't want to make decisions lightly and want to listen to the needs of all faculties. While this recalibration process takes place, the information on this website about Bloei is not up to date. Further information about the recalibrated setup will be shared with the academic community in the course of 2025.

What is Bloei?

Bloei is four years of funding that should further develop six existing interdisciplinary collaborations. Interdisciplinary research and teaching programmes with a proven track record will receive the support needed to improve their organisational structure, which will allow them to scale up and secure external funding. The Bloei funding may also be used for research and teaching tasks. With Bloei, Leiden University aims to raise its profile: proposals should therefore align with the university and faculties’ strategic ambitions.

Who is it for?

Bloei is for existing interdisciplinary collaborations/programmes with a track record that align with the university’s profile. These can be programmes with an emphasis on research, teaching or a mix of both. Applicants should demonstrate that this financial injection will help project reach its goals.

The applicant should be an internal party (Leiden University or Faculty of Medicine). The main applicants should be from at least two degree programmes, research institutes or a mixture of both. The initiatives should come from a team of academic and professional services staff and have a clear plan for the investment. The team should demonstrate strategic choices have been made based on a shared philosophy and vision on both the subject matter and the interdisciplinary teamwork. Proposals from parties already collaborating with external parties are not excluded, but the external party may not be a recipient of funds. If this collaboration demonstrably contributes to the objective, it is in fact an advantage. More partners may also join during the project.
