Camera surveillance
Whether you’re a student, staff member or external service provider, it’s important that you feel safe at Leiden University. A range of measures are in place to assure safety and security in all the university’s buildings and grounds.
Camera surveillance and video recording
Safety and security are assured by means of camera surveillance and video recording. Leiden University handles the camera footage with great care. It is collected in secure storage and can only be accessed by authorised staff members. The rights of the individuals who are filmed are respected and Leiden University complies with the General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR). More information can be found in the Camera Surveillance Privacy Statement.
Stickers or signs are used to indicate where the cameras are located in the buildings and grounds.
Viewing the camera footage
The reception staff in our buildings watch some camera images live, so that they can take immediate action in case of emergency. The other recorded footage is only viewed by authorised staff members, for example if an incident has occurred. The camera footage is stored for a maximum of 28 days and is not shared with third parties, unless this is required for a police investigation.
