Our vision on lifelong development
LLO vision
The University’s ambition with lifelong development are stated in the vision Learn, Develop, Grow. This vision is summarized below.
Connecting our research and teaching
- By connecting our research and teaching, we enhance our value for the professional and the organization.
- Our continuing education focuses on knowledge from our research disciplines and cross-curricular skills.
- We provide space for academic reflection on work practice and social developments, with a constructive, critical and independent attitude.
Interaction with professionals and the work field
- Interaction with professionals and the work field is of great value to our university.
- With continuing education, we deepen the connection between professionals and scientists.
- Contact with the professional field offers opportunities to better connect our research and education with the labor market and society.
Lifelong Development will be embedded in the university organization
- Faculty portfolio holders in education will be responsible for (the content and quality of) the lifelong development portfolio.
- We appoint a university ambassador for Lifelong Development.
- The Leiden University Academy will become the one-stop-shop for employers, professionals and the university.
Identify learning needs and further expand our interdisciplinary lifelong development offer
- Together with the professional field and knowledge partners, we will identify learning needs and further expand our interdisciplinary lifelong development offer.
- In our exploration, we seek cooperation with other educational institutions in the region, for example with our LDE partners and universities of applied sciences.
Continuing education alongside our initial education, in a flexible manner
- Our modules align well with the needs of professionals and employers,
- Our offer aligns well with the needs of professionals and employers, and therefore consist primarily of short-term modules that include a mix of online learning and physical meetings. We award microcredentials for successful modules and learning courses.
- Because professionals often have different learning needs than initial students, we organize much of our continuing education apart from our initial education.
- We make our ICT systems suitable and accessible for education for professionals and our university ready for continuing education. In doing so, we lower the barriers to start and scale up new initiatives.
Lifelong development efforts count, are recognized and appreciated
- Because the connection with academic research makes our continuing education distinctive, we believe it is important that our own staff is used for this purpose.
- We are working toward a situation where continuing education is part of the mission, where there is attention for continuing education in recruitment and selection and where our staff is appreciated and rewarded for their efforts.
