Plagiarism detection

The Leiden University doctorate regulations stipulate that all PhD dissertations need to be checked for plagiarism. A professional tool, iThenticate, is now available which is also used by scientific publishers.

Procedure

When the PhD candidate has finished his/her dissertation, the supervisor sends the manuscript to the Institute’s key user (see scheme below). The key user uploads the dissertation in iThenticate and sends the plagiarism report by email to the supervisor. Subsequently, the supervisor checks the outcome of the plagiarism report, uploads the plagiarism report in Converis and declares (by placing a check mark in Converis) that “the dissertation has successfully passed a plagiarism detector and in every other respect meets the applicable code of conduct on academic practice”. The flowchart (on the right side of this page) shows the overall procedure.
