Hybrid teaching

Hybrid teaching combines face-to-face teaching on campus with online attendance: some students are present in class, while others join remotely at the same time via a livestream.

This gives flexibility and allows you to meet the needs of students who want to participate in the class but aren’t able to be on campus, due to sickness or other circumstances.

Please be aware, however, that combining online and on-campus students can be quite challenging, especially in terms of facilitating equal interaction between participants in both groups. Nevertheless, hybrid teaching makes it possible for everyone to be actively involved, both in class and online.

Organising hybrid teaching

Before the lecture

Reserve a hybrid lecture room

Several lecture rooms are equipped for hybrid teaching, with a built-in webcam and microphone:

  • Lipsius 1.13
  • HMO 0.02
  • HMO 0.10
  • HMO 0.12
  • HMO 0.18
  • HMO 0.24

If you’d like an advance explanation of how the technology works in the hybrid room, please make an appointment with the AV service via avd-wsd@UFB.leidenuniv.nl.

Book for the entire semester

Contact your education coordinator no later than the end of February to make a reservation for the next academic year, clearly stating the period for which you want to use the hybrid lecture room (for the whole course? only in certain weeks? just once?). 

The education coordinator will organise the booking* and you will receive feedback. 

*Note for education coordinators: To book a hybrid lecture room, indicate that you want to book a hybrid lecture room in the remarks section of the booking system.

Book for a single time or just a few sessions

Use this form and indicate in the remarks section that you want to use a hybrid lecture room.

Arrange a webcam

If there is no hybrid room available, you can loan a webcam with built-in microphone from the Lipsius reception desk to use in any of the other rooms. There’s no need to reserve the webcam: simply collect it and bring it back after the lecture.

Use of videoconferencing tools

To give your hybrid lecture, you should use one of the university’s videoconferencing tools, such as MS Teams or Zoom. You can check which tool is most suitable for your teaching.

During the lecture

  • Arrive early so that you have time to prepare everything in the room.
  • Place the webcam on a tripod, if necessary, and connect it to the computer in the room.
  • Open your chosen software (MS Teams/Kaltura Live Room/Zoom) and display it on the screen.
  • If you’re giving a presentation, open PowerPoint, the website or the document in the videoconferencing tool, so that it can be seen by students both online and on campus.
  • If you have any technical problems, call AV support on 6529.
