Training opportunities
We want to facilitate teacher development in the area of diversity and inclusion by offering specialized training opportunities.
The hands-on tools and training help lecturers and tutors to foster an inclusive learning environment in class, online, and within the teacher-student dynamic, in which both students and instructors feel respected regardless of their ethnicity, religion, gender, sexual orientation, (dis)ability, age and socio-economic background.
Examples of training opportunities are:
UTQ Module Inclusive Education: The training will focus on pedagogy for a diverse student population. In your teaching practice you will encounter a wide variety of students, all with their own history, personality and challenges. In order to enable all your students to benefit from your teaching, you will need to deal with these student differences purposefully; but how do you do that? How do you reach all your students?
UTQ Module Inclusive Education – Making the Change: This follow-up module will focus on implementing changes in the curriculum of your program. The intended learning outcomes of the study program, and learning outcomes of individual courses will be taken as a starting point. Based on theory, literature searches and discussions with students and peers you will work out a plan with specific actions to implement in curriculum.
Masterclass Diversity & Inclusion: Masterclass (2x4hrs) offered by dr. Baukje Prins on how to deal with challenges related to diversity and inclusion in one’s classroom. Various topics are explored, such as the perspectives of superdiversity and intersectionality, the use and abuse of notions of culture and identity, discussions on ‘race’ and racism, and the relevance and pitfalls of wokeness and privilege checking. The training consists of lectures and interactive workshops, linking theoretical insights with guidelines for educational practice, of watching and discussing a thought provoking documentary on racism, and working through real-life classroom situations.
Safe space: Interactive training offering tools and knowledge on how to create a safe classroom environment whilst dealing with emotions and/or discussing controversial topics.
Inclusive Pathway Training: The Inclusivity Pathway Training (IPT) is designed to assist in the development of skills necessary to facilitate inclusive learning situations and or working environments, whether they be one-on-one, in a group, on the work floor, personal, or in the classroom. It aims to build people’s confidence in using basic skills and is based on the premise that the majority of interventions of inclusion work inform the “what”, but not necessarily the “how”.
Implicit Bias: Implicit bias describes the attitudes or associations we hold about individuals or groups of people. This training provides insight into how implicit bias can influence your understanding of others and the decisions you make in the context of your work. The training also helps you to develop techniques to counteract the effects of these biases.
Active Bystander: Racism, bullying, sexual harassment and other inappropriate behaviours contribute to a toxic culture. The impact they have on people can be hugely detrimental – leading to stress, anxiety and mental health problems. That’s why it’s essential for everyone to know how to speak up when problems arise. This innovative and award-winning training gives you the skills to challenge unacceptable behaviours, including those which may have become normalised over time.
