Study adviser – Maternity cover (1.0 fte)
The Institute of Political Science of the Faculty of Social and Behavioural Sciences is looking for an enthusiastic study adviser for a temporary maternity cover for the English-taught Political Science bachelor’s specialisation in International Relations and Organisations (IRO, based in The Hague. You will be working alongside two colleagues, forming a team of three study advisers in total for the IRO programme. The position will be for 6 months, from 1 January 2025 to 1 July 2025.

What will you do

  • Advising and assisting international and Dutch bachelor’s students, e.g.,
  1. Supplying information to students about the curriculum, their study progress and academic career, and advising them on study-related questions.
  2. Assisting students who need extra support.
  • Contributing to providing information for prospective students and recruitment of bachelor’s students.
  • Monitoring unclarities and complaints, within both the curriculum and the Course and Examination Regulations, and reporting on these to the relevant authorities.
  • If necessary, consulting with – and if necessary, referring students to – the Student Career Service, student counsellors, student psychologists or other specialists.
  • Holding regular discussions with the team of study advisers, mentors, teaching staff, Programme Coordinator, Internationalisation Officer, Exchange Coordinator, Internship Coordinator, Education Administration Office staff and members of the Board of Examiners.
  • Maintain accurate administration and reporting of, (digital) records and files.
  • Organise plenary information sessions.

What you bring

  • Academic education to Master’s (or Dutch doctoraal) level or equivalent experience.
  • Experience in advising and assisting students.
  • Good knowledge of rules and regulations in the area of higher education, and experience with processes within an academic educational institution.
  • Strong organizational and communicative skills and the ability to prioritize tasks.
  • A results-oriented, initiative-taking, proactive and flexible work attitude.
  • A collaborative team player who works well in a small team environment.
  • Respectful approach and persuasive skills, with the ability to take account of diversity and inclusiveness.
  • Excellent command of English and Dutch (level C1 or higher), spoken and written.
  • IT skills; knowledge of the Leiden University information systems (including uSis) is desirable.
  • The position is located in The Hague, but we expect willingness to work in Leiden as well.

The Faculty of Social and Behavioural Sciences consists of five institutes: Centre for Science and Technology Studies, Cultural Anthropology and Development Sociology, Political Science, and Psychology. About the institute
The Institute of Political Science of the Faculty of Social and Behavioural Sciences is a research and education institute with around 85 academic staff members and 1700 students. The Institute offers a range of taught programmes at the Bachelor and Master levels and also trains PhD students in political science. The BSc programmes include general Political Science (in Dutch & English, in Leiden), International Politics (in Dutch & English, in Leiden), and International Relations and Organisations (in English, in The Hague). The one-year MSc programme (taught mostly in English) includes five specialisations in Leiden and one in The Hague.

We offer a challenging position in a dynamic team of colleagues. The appointment will take place in accordance with the Collective Labour Agreement of Dutch Universities, initially for a period of 6 months. The salary range, depending on education and work experience, is from € 3,502 to € 5,278 gross per month, based on a full-time position (University Job Classification profile: Study Adviser, scale 9 or 10).


We also offer:

  • A holiday allowance (8%), an end-of-year bonus (8,3%), and an attractive pension scheme at ABP;
  • Flexible working hours: as a standard, you are entitled to a minimum of 29 leave days on the basis of a full-time working week of 38 hours; you can also save for extra leave, for example by working 40 hours a week, and in this way accrue an extra 96 leave hours, or exchange 96 leave hours for a 36-hour week.
  • Lots of options when it comes to secondary employment conditions; we can, for example, discuss options for a sabbatical or paid parental leave. Within our terms of employment individual choices model, you can exchange leave days and/or salary for benefits such as an advantageous sports subscription or bicycle scheme, and we also offer child-care options;
  • If your work allows it, hybrid working is possible within the Netherlands;
  • A home-working allowance (day and internet allowance) and attention for good workplaces. The University will also provide you with a laptop and a mobile telephone (if applicable for the position).
