Applicants for the following 1-year master's programmes at Leiden University:

• Heritage and Museum Studies
• Colonial and Global History - Heritage and Postcolonial Studies
• Arts & Culture - Museum Studies
• Arts & Culture - Art History

Only for full-time study starting in September 2024 (academic year 2024-2025).

Applicants

For motivated and highly committed students and young professionals aged between 20 and 35, from Nigeria, South Africa, Sri Lanka and Suriname who wish to develop their knowledge of the international museum and heritage field, provenance research and the role of heritage in our society.

Important: arrange your 'Obligations and Conditions form' in time! 

As part of the application process you must submit an Obligations and Conditions form signed by Leiden University. This can take some time to arrange so we advise you to take the steps below by 2 April - to avoid missing the scholarship deadline.

1. Make sure you have submitted your application for admission to Leiden University.
2. Download the Obligations and Conditions form, read it carefully and sign it yourself.
3. Send a scanned copy of the signed form to Leiden University Scholarships Team by email: scholarships@sea.leidenuniv.nl. Important: clearly state your Leiden University student number in your email (see your online application in uSis).   
4. The Scholarships Team will check you have submitted an application for one of the eligible study programmes at Leiden University.
5. The Scholarships Teams will sign the form and return it to you by email.

About the scholarship

The Cultural Heritage Scholarship Programme is funded by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Netherlands and managed by Nuffic, aligning with Dutch policy based on the Advice on Colonial Collections and Recognition of Injustice from the Gonçalves Commission.

Because of the imbalance of power during the colonial era, cultural objects were often improperly obtained. The Dutch government is keen to help rectify this historic injustice by returning cultural heritage objects to their country of origin and by strengthening international cooperation in this area.
