New podcasts on Islam in South and Southeast Asia
As part of the final project for the Islam in South and Southeast Asia course (taught by Dr Verena Meyer), students were tasked with creating podcasts that delve into significant cultural and historical topics related to the region. Two students, Roma Bhiekhemsing and Shaneeva Bean, have chosen to share their podcasts, offering unique perspectives on South Asian history, culture, and mysticism. You can listen to the podcasts here.
Podcast 1: The Rise and Fall of Tawaifs in India
Tawaifs were renowned for their performances in royal courts and elite circles, where they were seen as intellectuals, cultural influencers, and even political players. While they were admired for their artistic abilities, their roles also sometimes involved sexual relationships, which were part of the complex nature of their position in society. The podcast highlights their cultural importance during the Mughal Empire, their shifting role under British colonial rule, and their marginalization after independence. Once celebrated for their artistic, intellectual, and political contributions, tawaifs faced new challenges during British rule, and their legacy has been largely overlooked in post-colonial India. Through their resilience, the podcast uncovers the tawaifs’ significant but often forgotten impact on India’s artistic, cultural, and political development, shedding light on their important but neglected legacy.
