Joanne van der Leun appointed as Academic Lead International Affairs

The Executive Board is delighted to announce that Joanne van der Leun took up the position of the university’s Academic Lead International Affairs starting 1 January 2025.

Hester Bijl is pleased that Joanne will bring her managerial experience and network as former dean to this position: ‘International networks are in good hands with Joanne and we look forward to continuing these collaborations.’

Joanne will become a member of the Una Europa Board of Directors, a position that was recently held by Koen Caminada. In addition, she will take over the tasks performed by Wim van den Doel at the League of European Research Universities (LERU), a network of research-intensive European universities. Joanne will represent LERU at central level and contribute to the network in consultation with the deans and the Executive Board.

For the time being, she will remain the chair of the temporary Committee for Assessing Ethical Aspects of Collaborations. In 2025, the Committee will issue recommendations on working methods and assessments. She will continue lecturing at Leiden Law School as Professor of Criminology and will also coordinate the national cross-cutting theme of the Social Sciences and Humanities sector plan for the SSH Council.
