HR or PSSC? Here’s what HR does

With which questions do you go to HR, and when should you contact the PSSC? What about leave arrangements? And what about career development? In this series, an HR colleague answers a different question every time. We’re kicking off with Elice Schöne, Head of HR at FWN.

‘Even I sometimes struggle to figure out where to go to with a particular question. Is it the Serviceplein, Self Service, through the helpdesk portal, or my manager? When I have time, I enjoy digging around for the answer. But when I’m busy, it’s a hassle. That’s when it’s great to have a colleague who can help. Hopefully, today, I can be that colleague for you.’

As an HR department, we support institutes and staff. Each HR adviser is the point of contact for specific organisational units. We advise managers on things like recruitment and selection, employee grading, contract extensions, promotions, terminations, and cases involving conflict or illness.

We're also here for you

As an employee, you can contact the HR adviser for your unit. By the time you reach out, we assume you’ve already looked for information and asked your manager – but still didn’t find the answer. We’re happy to assist or point you to the right person or place.

Contributing to faculty-wide developments

At our faculty, we’re working on leadership, recognition and rewards, integrated operations, education logistics, social safety, and diversity and inclusion. These are all key themes in our strategic plan, ‘Connecting through Curiosity.’ Naturally, HR contributes to these themes and is involved in many projects from the implementation agenda.

Contributing to university-wide developments

We also help develop policies, processes, and tools at a central level. For instance, think about GROW, global mobility, recruitment, and onboarding. On top of that, we provide strategic advice to faculty and institute leaders on organisational and workforce development. After all, people are the foundation of any organisation. It’s crucial to get that right.

What about the PSSC?

The Personnel Shared Service Centre (PSSC), part of the ASSC, handles personnel administration for the university. For questions about your salary, leave, GROW, Shuttel, or your employment, you can contact the PSSC. Much of the information you need is available on the website or via the Helpdesk Portal.

‘As HR, we’re right at the heart of the organisation, contributing to a wide range of topics. That’s exactly why I love working here. Every day is different.’
