The BIAS Project at the Webinar on Intersectional Fairness in AI

Carlotta Rigotti, Postdoc researcher at eLaw, participated in the ‘Intersectional Fairness in AI: Legal Frameworks, Tools, and Learning Opportunities’ webinar on 10 December 2024.

The webinar, hosted by Crowdhelix in collaboration with the European Union-funded project DIVERSIFAIR, focused on addressing key biases in AI systems that impact recruitment and workplace equity, with particular attention to race, gender, and social identities. It also explored the implications of Regulation (EU) 2024/1689 (commonly referred to as the ‘AI Act’) on AI-powered practices in the workplace, as well as practical tools for AI auditing and bias detection to ensure ethical AI implementation.

Carlotta joined an expert panel alongside Susan Leavy (University College Dublin) and Ilina Georgieva (TNO). Carlotta provided a critical overview of how the AI Act applies to AI systems designed for and used in the workplace. She emphasized the importance of raising awareness and training diverse stakeholders on both the positive and negative implications of AI for job applicants and workers, particularly those from socially marginalized groups.

If you are interested in the AI Act and its impact on the labour market, stay tuned for upcoming publications on the topic.
