OSCARS Grant Awarded for BIO-CODES Project
Dr. Sylvia Le Dévédec has been awarded an OSCARS grant for the project BIO-CODES. OSCARS, a four-year Horizon Europe initiative, promoting the adoption of Open Science in Europe by building on the successes of world-class European Research Infrastructures (RIs) in the ESFRI roadmap and beyond. Among the funded Open Science projects is BIO-CODES, which will run for 18 months with a budget of €250,000 and will benefit the Euro-BioImaging infrastructure, of which the Leiden Cell Observatory is a part.
The BIO-CODES project will evaluate the application of the International Standard Content Code (ISCC)—an open-source, global ISO standard identification system—for bioimaging data. Its goal is to improve the AI-readiness of bioimaging datasets by developing and implementing content-based identifiers. This will address the growing complexity of bioimaging data, ensuring compliance with FAIR principles while preparing datasets for reliable AI-driven analysis. By integrating unique identifiers into platforms like OMERO, BIO-CODES aims to enhance data integrity, streamline bioimage certification, and ensure transparency and reproducibility.
The project is coordinated by Dr. Le Dévédec and involves collaboration with experts including Dr. Katy Wolstencroft (FAIR data specialist, AMC), Dr. Josh Moore (OME team, bioformat and OMERO expert), and Titusz Pan (ISCC Foundation). Together, they aim to standardize bioimaging workflows, fostering greater transparency and collaboration among researchers.
