Carlotta Rigotti at Coventry University Brussels Hub
Carlotta Rigotti, Postdoc researcher at eLaw, was invited by Conventry University to join a roundtable on policy approaches to address online and technology-facilitated violence.
On 19–20 November 2024, Carlotta took part in the summit Future Proofing Technology-Facilitated Gender-Based Violence, hosted by the Coventry University Brussels Hub and co-organised by Dr Lindsay Balfour and Dr Adrienne Evans.
Carlotta participated in one of the central roundtable discussions, joined by feminist activists and representatives from the private sector. Together, they explored a variety of approaches to raising awareness of online and technology-facilitated violence against women. The discussion aimed to bridge the divide between policy and activist perspectives, while also focusing on how legal frameworks can evolve to keep pace with rapidly advancing technologies, while ensuring greater protection for historically oppressed groups in the digital space. In addition to sharing her experience in teaching and advocating for legal reforms that reflect the lived experiences of victims, Carlotta stressed that gender-based violence is not only a significant societal issue but also a source of profit, further complicating efforts to combat it.
The roundtable concluded with a collective agreement on the need for cross-sector collaboration to address these challenges. Participants underscored the importance of a multi-disciplinary approach, recognising that only through the combined expertise of legal professionals, activists, policymakers, and the tech industry can meaningful solutions be developed to protect women and girls online.
