Photo report of the university float in the Grand Parade
The Grand Parade was a festive highlight of the 450th anniversary celebration of 3 October. Students and staff members from Leiden University participated with an impressive float, which took the audience on a walking timeline from 1575 to the present day.
The parade began with the symbolic handover of the keys from William of Orange to the city of Leiden. This was followed by appearances from renowned alumni of Leiden, such as Christiaan Huygens, Lizzy van Dorp, and King Willem-Alexander. They were succeeded by the iconic ‘Zweetkamertje’ (Sweat Room) on wheels, where spectators could sign their names and receive a symbolic diploma. The procession was completed by the 'Nonnenbrug' and, of course, the Academy Building.
Over 50 staff members from all 7 faculties took part. Some were seasoned residents of Leiden, while others were international colleagues experiencing the Relief of Leiden celebrations for the first time. In addition, 35 celebrating students also joined in.
