Hip and sustainable: restaurant De Schotel opens in the Lecture Hall Building
Looking for a great meal at a sustainable restaurant? Since Monday 2 September, you can visit restaurant De Schotel in the Lecture Hall Building. This renovated space offers a unique combination of comfortable study areas, a no-internet zone, and a wide selection of delicious food and drinks.
At De Schotel, circular is the keyword: all furniture is either reused from other catering venues or made from recycled materials. This not only makes the restaurant eco-friendly furnishings, but also a cozy and characterful atmosphere.
Sustainable and with social impact
The tables in the study area come from DZB Leiden’s circular wood workshop. Here, waste and residual wood are transformed into reusable building materials that are used to make tables. The circular wood workshop employs people with a distance to the labour market. They can discover their talents and make a valuable social contribution through projects such as this one.
From coffee to planter
Even the planters in the restaurant have a unique story: the outside is made from coffee laminate, applied to Ecoplex. The beans for your cup of coffee have now been repurposed into sheet material. To give the planters the longest possible life, the inside is lined with waterproof bags made from recycled car tyres.
Sustainable menu
De Schotel's menu is also increasingly sustainable. The Pure concept focuses on foods that are better for the environment. The goal is to reduce the restaurant's food carbon footprint by 25% by 2027 compared to 2019.
The restaurant is part of the new science campus. You can find it at the Leiden Bio Science Park in the "schotel," the Lecture Hall Building next to the new Gorlaeus Building. Want to come for lunch with your team or study group? The restaurant is open from 9.00 hrs to 14.00 hrs. The study spaces and seating area are available until 18.00 hrs. Reservations can be made via email.
