KIEM grant for 'CARMA: Community Archive and Repository for Multimodal and Artistic Research'

Andrew Hoffman (CADS), Mark Westmoreland (CADS) and Yasmin Ismail (CADS) have received a KIEM grant of € 10.000 for their project 'CARMA: Community Archive and Repository for Multimodal and Artistic Research'. The grant will be used to create a 'living laboratory' that helps researchers, data management experts from the Faculty of Social & Behavioural Sciences and Faculty of Humanities, and digital scholarship librarians at the University Library exchange and integrate diverse knowledge and user needs.

Non-traditional research data and outputs (NTROs), like films, sound recordings, and experimental computer hardware, are generally less visible in the digital scholarly record than text-based materials. This limits their discoverabiliy and reuse, posing challenges for evolving knowledge production and transdisciplinary collaboration in the social sciences, humanities, and arts (SSH+A).

Using the extended network of ReCNTR – Leiden University's hub for multimodal and audiovisual research methods – this project will create a 'living laboratory.' This lab will help researchers, data management experts from the Faculty of Social & Behavioural Sciences and Faculty of Humanities, and digital scholarship librarians at the University Library to exchange and integrate diverse knowledge and user needs. Based on these discussions, project members will work with a software developer to design and prototype a small-scale, community-driven resource. Initially, this resource will help Leiden's social sciences, humanities, and arts researchers better catalog, search, and reuse their multimodal and artistic research data and outputs, aiming for future integration with existing scholarly communications and open research information systems.
