Out now! LEAP # 4: Subject: Matter
The editorial board of the Leiden Elective Academic Periodical (LEAP) is proud to announce the release of the fourth edition, titled “Subject: Matter”!
The (Research) Master students who made up the editorial board for the fourth edition of the Leiden Elective Academic Periodical (LEAP) approached the theme of “matter” from a wide range of disciplinary perspectives. Next to writing and rewriting their individual articles, the students also collectively worked as an editorial board. They shared the responsibilities of peer-reviewing, editing and copy-editing each other’s work, organizing a mini-symposium, writing an introduction, putting the manuscript together, designing the cover, and posting updates about their progress on LinkedIn.
Now, after a semester of intense work and collaboration under the supervision of Astrid Van Weyenberg and Nanne Timmer, with the help of editorial assistant Nicholas Turner, they are proud to announce the fourth edition of LEAP, titled “Subject: Matter”! The contributing authors draw on a new materialist tradition with a broad understanding of ‘matter’ serving as a framework for categorizing the diverse contributions into three groupings: culture, environment(s), and politics. This year’s editorial board was formed by the (R)MA students Rajae El Morabet Belhaj, Eloise Huai-Yung Huang, Zeno Grootenboer, Rebecca Billi, Mikko Pekkonen, Rik J. Janssen, Nicolás Vargas Varillas and Berkant Isaev.
During the festive launch on 19 June 2024, the first copy was handed to Frank van den Boom, one of the first MA students to publish in LEAP when it launched in 2021.

About the Leiden Elective Academic Periodical (LEAP)
LEAP is a peer-reviewed journal founded in 2021 by a team of junior and senior scholars of Leiden University as part of a Faculty-broad Master course. Each year the journal has a new editorial board and a new theme. Series editors Astrid Van Weyenberg and Nanne Timmer guide this process and are assisted by editor Anthony T. Albright and a group of excellent peer reviewers from the Faculty of Humanities.
