Nico Schrijver appointed Interim Chair of Netherlands Institute for Human Rights

Nico Schrijver, Professor Emeritus of Public International Law, has been appointed Interim Chair of the Netherlands Institute for Human Rights. He will take up the position on 1 July 2024.

Schrijver has extensive legal, management and political experience. In recent years, he was State Councillor at the Council of State. Before that, he was a member of the Senate for the PvdA (Labour Party) over a six-year period. In addition to his professorship at Leiden Law School, he has previously worked as a guest professor at Université Libre de Bruxelles, professor at VU Amsterdam and a lecturer at the Institute of Social Studies in The Hague. Netherlands Institute for Human Rights

The Netherlands Institute for Human Rights conducts research, advises the Dutch government and parliament, reports to international human rights institutions, provides information and promotes human rights education.

In addition to his appointment at the Netherlands Institute for Human Rights, Schrijver also recently received a Royal Decoration as Officer in the Order of Orange-Nassau.

Mayor Jan van Zanen of The Hague, who presented the decoration, praised Professor Schrijver for being ‘a connector with remarkable drive’.
