From September, your own laptop will be the standard for lectures
Using all the software you need for lectures on your own laptop. From the new academic year, that will be the standard at our faculty. That is when the Bring Your Own Device pilot will start. The arrival of the software distribution platform brings many benefits. ‘Teaching will become more flexible and secure.’
The Bring Your Own Device platform allows students to obtain the software needed for their lectures in different ways. ‘The platform is a central place where students can log in to access the software they need for their studies,’ explains project leader Esther Van Landeghem. 'This can be done in various ways. For example, students can download and install software on their own laptops, allowing them to use it offline. In addition, some software packages are available online through the platform, similar to the way Brightspace works. Students can log in and immediately use the online environment.'
Working anytime and anywhere
One of the biggest advantages of the platform is its wide accessibility. Currently, students can often only use the software during lectures or physically on campus. With Bring Your Own Device, they can easily access this software via the platform. This gives them more flexibility to work anytime and anywhere. This will soon also be possible outside lectures and building opening hours.' According to Van Landeghem, Bring Your Own Device opens up more opportunities for software-based teaching.
Important changes for teachers
Things will also change for teachers. 'Teachers must, for example, clearly communicate which software students need to install for their lectures. There will be a template in Brightspace in which this can easily be indicated.' Teachers must also think carefully in advance about which software they want to use. ‘They need to indicate this in good time so that it can be made available on the platform.’
Are you a teacher? Come to one of the information sessions!
To ensure a smooth transition, Van Landeghem's team is organizing a series of information sessions for teachers in June. 'In these, we will show how the platform works and answer questions. These sessions will be offered at different times and days to give as many teachers as possible the chance to participate. Moreover, all relevant information, deadlines and contact forms for requesting missing software can now be found on an intranet page.'
