Construction Day: Time to come and take a look in the University’s new Spui Building

You might be wondering what the reconstruction of the former V&D store at Spui in The Hague looks like now. If so, you can come and find out for yourself. On Saturday 8 June 2024, from 10.00 – 13.00 hrs., the building site of the new Campus The Hague Leiden University Building will be open to the public.

A new university building will open in the centre of The Hague in January 2026. Besides Leiden University, the TU Delft, the Open University, LUMC, Universities of the Netherlands and the University of Edinburgh  will have premises in the former V&D (and later Hudson’s Bay) building.  The over 20,000 m2 building will provide space for more than 4,000 students, lecturers, researchers, administrators and city residents to come together and inspire one another.

Open for viewing during Construction Day

During Construction Day the building will be open to the public between 10.00 and 13.00 hrs. The contractor has worked out a route that visitors can follow independently to view the building work.  Along the route there will be pictures of what it will look like in the future. As well as the contractor, the architect and Leiden University will also be present to answer questions.

Renovation and new building

The rough lines of the new education building are becoming clearer. At the moment, the contractor is working on the so-called 'structural work': installation work, steelwork and plastering. Foundation work for new building on the Spuistraat side will start soon. Once the building is finished, some of the functions of the Beehive will move to the ground floor of this new building. Above that will be the large lecture halls, and above these there will be a roof terrace with fantastic views over the city.
