Faculty of Humanities joins 'Hidden Disabilities Sunflower'

A hidden disability can make studying a considerable challenge, partly because of the disability itself, but also because others may not realise that extra support is justified. To overcome this problem, the Faculty of Humanities is introducing the Hidden Disabilities Sunflower.

The Hidden Disabilities Sunflower is an image of a sunflower displayed on a lanyard or badge, for example. By wearing these items, you can subtly signal that you need extra support or a little more time.

Who is it for?

The Hidden Disabilities Sunflower is for anyone who wants to make a hidden disability more visible. Hidden disabilities have no physical signs and include learning disabilities, mental health problems and mobility, speech, visual or hearing impairments. They can also include asthma, COPD and other lung conditions, as well as chronic diseases such as kidney failure, diabetes, epilepsy and sleep disorders if these diseases significantly affect daily life.

Where?

Sunflower lanyards and badges are available at the following locations:
Education Administration Desk, Huizinga
Education Administration Desk, Vrieshof
Lipsius Study Centre
Education Administration Desk, Arsenaal
Education Administration Desk, Wijnhaven

More about the Hidden Disabilities Sunflower

The Hidden Disabilities Sunflower is an initiative from the UK that allows people to make their hidden disability visible so that others can identify and recognise the daily challenges it presents. Since its launch in 2016, the Hidden Disabilities Sunflower has been adopted worldwide by major airports and meeting places. Leiden City Council also recently decided to commit to Hidden Disabilities Sunflower. Starting with its student welfare, diversity and inclusion services, the Faculty of Humanities is now also getting involved.
