Europa Institute hosts Martijn Stronks for its third ‘Meet the Author’ event
On Tuesday 14 June, the Europa Institute welcomed Martijn Stronks, Assistant Professor at the Amsterdam Centre of Migration and Refugee Law of the Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam, for its third ‘Meet the Author’ event.
In the context of this new event series, organised by Melanie Fink and Vestert Borger, external academics are welcomed to Leiden University to discuss a recent publication of theirs. The interactive event typically opens with a conversation between a member of the Europa Institute and the visiting author, after which the floor is open for questions from the audience.
At the third instalment of the series, Martijn Stronks visited Leiden to discuss his book Grasping Legal Time. Temporality and European Migration Law, which was published by Cambridge University Press in 2022. In his book, Martijn explores the success and limitations of the usage of time in migration law. He looks at the interplay between two distinct philosophical conceptualisations of time – ‘clock’ and ‘human’ – arguing that the latter is linked to the notion of human dignity. At the Europa Institute, Martijn engaged in a conversation with Jorrit Rijpma on the main elements of his book. The event closed with an audience Q&A, where the links between time and different existing legal principles were contemplated.
