Alumni event Brussels: ‘Europe and the new geopolitical reality’
On 23 February 2023, Leiden University organised an alumni event in Brussels, which was attended by around a hundred people. Joris Larik, representing Leiden University College (LUC) The Hague and the Europa Institute, spoke on the expert panel on interdisciplinary perspectives on ‘Europe and the new geopolitical reality’.
Following opening remarks from Annetje Ottow, President of the Executive Board, on Leiden University's Brussels Strategy and its new Europa Hub, speakers from four different faculties engaged in a debate on the different aspects of the new geopolitical situation and the place of Europe therein. Larik focused on the direction of Dutch foreign policy, drawing on a recent report for the Dutch Advisory Council on International Affairs in which he was involved, advances in the EU's response instruments, and future EU enlargement, including Ukraine's prospects of accession.
The panel was followed by a reception to continue the discussion informally and catch up with the alumni community. Among the many alumni that attended the event were also graduates from LUC and Law, who are pursuing a variety of careers in Brussels, including at the European Commission, NATO, top-tier law firms, consultancies, and NGOs.
