Leiden University 12th in global sustainability ranking
Leiden University has taken 12th place in the UI Green Metric, a global sustainability ranking for universities. Over 1,000 universities from all around the world take part in the ranking.
The UI Green Metric is the initiative of the University of Indonesia (UI). Each year it assesses how universities around the world deal with energy, the climate, waste recycling, transport and water, for example. It also looks at the extent to which sustainability is included in their research and teaching, and which budget is allocated to this.
Dutch universities
This year 1,050 universities took part in the ranking, 94 more than last year. Leiden University takes 12th place, five places lower than last year, making it the third most sustainable university in the Netherlands. The University of Groningen is the second most sustainable university in the Netherlands and is fourth on this year’s list. Wageningen University & Research is number one in the ranking and for the sixth time running the most sustainable university in the world.
More sustainable on all fronts
Leiden University was awarded 9,025 out of a possible 10,000 points, making its final score 300 points higher than last year’s. Its score is higher in all categories this year and significantly higher in the categories of energy and climate change, education and research, and transportation in particular. This is due in part to the Living Lab, which is exploring future scenarios for the Dutch landscape and how climate change and land use will affect this. Leiden University has done best in the categories of waste and water, earning full marks as it did last year.
