From 1 October, two new Directors of Education will start at the Institute of Biology Leiden (IBL). Dennis Claessen as the new director for the master's programme of Biology and Marcel Schaaf as director for the Biology bachelor's programme. Claessen and Schaaf have been appointed for a period of four years and succeed Han de Winde.
‘All-rounder’
Dennis Claessen is professor of Molecular Microbiology. He studied and obtained his PhD in Groningen and came to work in Leiden in 2010. Bart Smit, vice dean and education portfolio holder, is very happy with Claessen's appointment: ‘As a researcher, Dennis is an all-rounder who knows how to motivates students like no other.
‘Bevlogen en gedreven’
Marcel Schaaf is an associate professor who obtained the Senior Teaching Qualification last year. He is an enthusiastic researcher but also a very passionate teacher. For instance, he knows all the names of his students by heart, even if there are a hundred of them. 'There are handy tricks for that.' Bart de Smit praises his years of commitment to the subjects he teaches and innovates himself. ‘Together with his colleagues, he is always committed to improving the educational programme.’
