Leiden University supports the Caribbean Center for Children’s Rights
Prof. Ton Liefaard and Chrisje Sandelowsky-Bosman visited Curaçao to launch de Caribbean Center for Children’s Rights and present research.
“Children’s rights matter throughout the Kingdom of the Netherlands.” This was the core message of various presentations and lectures of Prof. Ton Liefaard and Chrisje Sandelowsky-Bosman, who visited Curaçao in November 2021. Both researchers of Leiden Law School visited Curacao to attend the launch of the Caribbean Center for Children’s Rights at the University of Curaçao that aims to gather and disseminate knowledge about children’s rights in Caribbean region. The Center was set up in collaboration with Leiden Law School’s UNICEF Chair in Children’s Rights and UNICEF the Netherlands. During the launch, Chrisje Sandelowsky presented her research project on undocumented children in Curaçao, which was conducted together with the University of Curacao and supported by the Leiden University Fund/Schim van der Loeff Fund.
Ton Liefaard and Chrisje Sandelowsky furthermore touched base with various stake-holders, including government officials and representatives of non-governmental organisations. Memorable was the visit to the Maria Immaculata Lyceum where they discussed with young people what matters for them in terms of their rights.
Later in the week, Prof. Liefaard gave a special workshop to civil servants on the upcoming visit of Curacao to the United Nations Committee on the Rights of the Child. He also had the pleasure to attend a meeting between Her Royal Highness Princess Beatrix, the Gouvernor of Curacao, Mrs. Lucille George-Wout and young people, organised by UNICEF the Netherlands and the Ministry of Social Affairs of Curacao.
Prof. Ton Liefaard and Chrisje Sandelowsky-Bosman are grateful for the hospitality of all who welcomed them warmly. They look back on an inspiring week and look forward to visit Curaçao soon again.
