Call for proposals Scaliger Institute fellowship grants
The submission deadline for applications to Leiden University Libraries (UBL) Scaliger Institute fellowship programmes has been set for 1 April 2022. The Scaliger Institute, the special collections research centre of the UBL, supports scholars in any field of study and from anywhere in the world to undertake research, explore, and examine the extensive Leiden Special Collections by supplying research grants.
Scaliger Institute fellowships
The Scaliger Institute offers several fellowships, each with a different focus. The new Lingling Wiyadharma Fellowship offers the opportunity to three scholars to spend up to three months conducting research using the Southeast Asian and particularly the Indonesian special collections. We especially invite Indonesian scholars to apply for the fellowship. The Lingling Wiyadharma Fellowship is the only fellowship for which an extended deadline applies, set for 1 May 2022.
The long-running Brill Fellowship is sponsored by Leiden-based Brill publishing house and awards one or more fellowships yearly to researchers working on Brill publishing areas in the Humanities. For researchers interested in conducting scientific research on the extensive Leiden Digital Collections, the Scaliger Institute offers the Elsevier Fellowship for Digital Scholarship.

Researchers interested in studying the extensive Leiden University collections relating to Japanese culture and language can apply for the Isaac Alfred Ailion Fellowship, which offers both a junior and a senior fellowship. The only fellowship without financial compensation is the Scaliger Fellowship, which offers working space and facilities to visiting scholars from the Netherlands and abroad.
“One thing that makes the fellowship programme a great experience is that you get to meet very interesting people from around the world. It really is an interaction between the fellows and us, they learn from us and we learn from them. When the fellows return to their own universities, they go back to work enriched with knowledge.”
