Discover how research by anthropology students can contribute to solutions for current public problems
Wondering what anthropology students can contribute in daily practice? Both during their bachelor's and master's studies, anthropology students conduct research at the request of social organisations in Leiden via Leren met de Stad. Last week, they presented their experiences and results on the various research questions in a video. Check out their videos (Dutch only) to learn more about their research, social problems and solutions in Leiden and the role of anthropologists in these issues.
In the third-year bachelor course Personal and Professional Impact (PPI), students research a social issue in groups. They do this on the assignment of a public organisation in Leiden. At the end of their investigation, they present advice to the organisation, including recommendations on how to solve the issue. By doing so, students learn about specific social problems in their environment and experience how they can contribute to society with their anthropological knowledge and skills.
Need-based research in De Kooi
Bachelor students Veronie Rouschop, Jasmijn Lei, Dionne Brouwer, Mandy Huibregtsen and Sanne Dekker have been conducting need-based research to look at the necessities of residents of the neighbourhood De Kooi to see if they can bridge the gap between De Kooi and other parts of Leiden.

Not only bachelor students of the PPI course have done research via Leren met de Stad. Marleen Kok made a documentary for the third-year bachelor subject Visual Methods, called Woensdag Soepdag. This is a film about a weekly soup afternoon organised by the residents' association Zwijgers van Noord in the Hoven district of Leiden. In her presentation for Leren met Stad, she talked to one of the respondents from her documentary about how he experienced working together with her. Master students of the specialisation Policy in Practise have also done research through the partnership Leren met de Stad. Anaïs Feron talks in her video about her research on (ex) homeless youth and how they reflect on the Leiden youth welfare system and Dirkje Baris discusses what resilience means for parents with a migration background.
