Online Campus The Hague Career Event gives hopeful message to students
From 12 to 16 April the joint Career Services of the faculties present on Campus The Hague organised the Online Campus The Hague Career Event. Around 600 students signed up! Every day of the week, they could join presentations, webinars and workshops presented by alumni, professionals and Career advisors, that help them prepare for their future career.
Keynote by dr. Jos Akkersmans
On Monday, Associate Professor Jos Akkermans kicked of the event by mentioning the importance of sustainable careers and confirmed that a career can be a chaotic path. He explained why the well-known term ‘career ladder’ is outdated, as it implies a one way route only goes up and with one possible exit, the top of the ladder. Not to worry, your first job is just a starting point. Your career will be an ongoing cycle and you are in control.
“The events were relevant and insightful, in particular ‘working in Brussels’ and ‘what to do after a bachelors degree’ showcased a different perspective to the linear model of transitioning into the working world and they highlighted the many opportunities that exist for graduates looking to start a career” - 3rd year LUC student
Every day, multiple webinars
Other webinars included a session about ‘Working after your Bachelor degree’, ‘How to find an internship’ and there were also sessions that focused on international careers like “Working in Brussels” and “Working at NATO”. In the latter, two young diplomats gave some useful tips for an international career. For example: Learn different languages, work hard and find your own niche, and don’t be too critical. Your first internship or job doesn’t have to be your dream job.
In another webinar, we learned that volunteer experience is very much well perceived in The Netherlands, (almost) as much as paid experience. So it’s a great way to build up your CV! Panel members Kristina, Leonie and Eva all had their own reasons for doing volunteer work; giving back, exploring new fields (of work), integrating in Dutch society as an international, gaining more experience and of course boosting your skills.
Throughout the week students could also have their CV and LinkedIn profiles checked by Career advisors, watch Career Development Bootcamps videos and learn about how to dress to impress during a job interview. This year, extra attention was also paid to applying for jobs with an occupational disability through a separate workshop.
Most of the sessions were recorded and you can also still watch the Career Service Bootcamp videos. You can find an overview here.
The Career Services organise events all year to help you prepare for your career. You can find all information on the Career Zone website.
