Leiden University 2nd Best Overall Respondent Side in the 2021 Jessup Moot Court
The Philip C. Jessup International Law Moot Court Competition is the world’s largest moot court competition. The Competition is a simulation of a fictional dispute between countries before the International Court of Justice. This year more than 570 law schools from across the world participated.
Leiden University was represented by five LL.M. Public International Law students: Benoît Chambon and Michael Hackett (Applicant), Olivia Campbell and Maeve Claffey (Respondent), and Liam Siry (Legal-Researcher). The team was coached by Ida Asscher and Mathilde Couloigner.
This year’s Jessup problem - Case Concerning the J-VID-18 Pandemic – concerned cutting-edge issues and fundamental questions of public international law with regard to, among others, a global pandemic and the obligations and responses of States with respect to the outbreak, freedom of movement, a claim for diplomatic asylum by an alleged rogue scientist, use of force against a civil aircraft, jurisdiction of the International Court of Justice, the principle of non-intervention and State responsibility.
