Israël must alleviate plight of Palestinians now
The International Court of Justice has issued an interim ruling calling on Israel to take immediate action to prevent genocide. South Africa had accused Israel of violating its obligations under the Genocide Convention, which both countries are a party to. Professor of Public International Law Larissa van den Herik was asked for comment by various media outlets.
Main points
On Dutch news programme RTL Nieuws, Van den Herik summarised the main points of the ruling:
'Israel has to take effective measures immediately to alleviate the plight of the Palestinians. Israel also has to prevent incitement to commit genocide. If it does happen, it has to be punished.'
