Jorrit Rijpma: Sending back asylum seekers is 'wishful thinking'
In the asylum plan presented last week, the Dutch cabinet announced that it would focus more on the departure of ‘Dublin claimants’. In doing so, the cabinet is pinning its hopes on a renewed EU plan.
Jorrit Rijpma, Professor of European Law, calls the cabinet’s intention to do more about the Dublin Regulation ‘wishful thinking’. Rijpma wonders whether, if it succeeds, it will be allowed at all to send asylum seekers back to Greece in certain cases. ‘And if it doesn’t work, and the chance of that is high, then Brussels or the courts will have done it again’, he says to Dutch newspaper De Telegraaf.
