Teaching East Asian Languages (TEAL): Challenges, Ideas and Innovations

Get Ready for the First TEAL Workshop!

What Is This All About?

East Asian (EA) studies are thriving in LIAS, often involving interdisciplinary and cross-regional research. As a vital component of EA studies, Teaching East Asian Languages (TEAL) involves navigating shared linguistic, cultural, and socio-regional characteristics, and will benefit from fostering integrated efforts. To address shared challenges, language teachers in Chinese, Japanese, and Korean (CJK) studies have proposed organizing the first TEAL Workshop on 4 June 2025.

What Is the Vibe?

Think of this as less of a formal “conference” and more of a lively hangout for sharing ideas.

  • Fun and Practical Talks: Sessions on interesting and timely topics allowing broad participation with minimal preparation.
  • Informal Chats and Brainstorms: Open discussions on shared challenges, lessons learned, creative teaching ideas, and confusing-but-interesting questions.
  • Tea and Treats: Ample tea breaks and refreshments to encourage informal networking and knowledge exchange. Lunch is included.

What Can Be Expected From the First TEAL Workshop?

The first workshop covers:

  • The Focused Theme Authenticity in TEAL: Colleagues will explore what “authenticity” really means in TEAL and how it ties into approaches like content-based teaching, corpus-driven methods, AI, and other Computer-Assisted Language Learning (CALL) innovations. Colleagues will be invited to give talks on this topic, and a panel discussion will follow.
  • The Broader Theme Current Practices and Innovations in TEAL: Colleagues are encouraged to present practical and innovative TEAL pedagogy techniques or relevant research. A panel discussion will also address questions from all participants, ensuring relevant and insightful exchanges.
