The day is crafted for those students who want to experience the programme, so the emphasis is on exactly that: joining a sample class, chatting with our staff and students and exploring the campus. We will also include a general information session, but the main focus there will be on Q&A. We recommend that you join an open day session before coming to the experience day, or if that is not possible, to check out some of LUC's videos on Instagram (listed on the right hand side).

Introduction & Plenary
We kick this session off with a quick introduction to LUC, followed by a plenary class. All attendees will join this class, and your parents are welcome to sit in on it as well. However, you can not use this plenary class as inspiration for your LUC reflection as part of your application.
Through recent real-world examples, we’ll uncover how seemingly straightforward data can be misleading and how understanding some key concepts of statistical reasoning is crucial for making informed decisions about complex social problems. We will discuss some concrete tips that will help you recognize when data may be deceiving and how to interpret it correctly. The best part - no prior knowledge of statistics is necessary.
Sample classes
After the general plenary class, you will join a sample class. You can find the descriptions of the classes below, to help you select the class of your choice. Parents will stay in the auditorium for a session taylored to the questions of parents. These are the classes on offer, in random order:
At LUC you will study global challenges and you will learn that many of these challenges can be found in your own new backyard. Even though The Netherlands is a wealthy welfare state, and the city of The Hague prosperous, people here struggle with homelessness, unemployment, religious intolerance, food insecurity, gentrification, to name but a few. In professor Caroline Archambault’s Global Citizenship course, “Struggle in the City”, students are guided in serious game and simulation design, with the aim of promoting recognition, empathy, and outreach of local struggles. In this session she invites you to demo some selected student creations to give you a firsthand experience of what it is like to be a student at LUC.
Political systems are notorious for being 'sticky' - that is, they don't change very easily. But sometimes they do. In this sample lecture, David will invite you to start thinking about the conditions for stability and change, both in your own life and in the society you live in.
The recent IPPC reports tell us – again – that climate change is one of the most pressing issues of our time and will affect modern human life globally. Locally extreme climate events such as droughts and storms already pose serious challenges to society – also here in the Netherlands. In this class we will discuss the pros and cons of several adaptation strategies to reduce extreme weather risks, such as geoengineering and nature-based solutions.
In this lecture, we dive into the fascinating world of the international law of the sea. We will explore the definitions, distinctions, and legal regimes that govern the various maritime features under international law. Ever wondered what truly defines an island, a rock, a low tide elevation, or an artificial island? How about the difference between a ship and an installation? We will uncover all of that and more. Join us for an exciting discussion where you deepen your understanding of the law of the sea and its real-world implications!
Can parents join the experience day?
We understand that parents and caregives play a key role in the University Exploration process. Parents are welcome to join this event, and are able to join most programme elements. However, parents & caregivers will be offered an alternative information session during the sample classes. The sample class will mimic a real university setting as much as possible, and you will therefore join without your parents.
Note: if you are joining this event in order to join an LUC experience as part of the application process, you have to write your reflection about the small scale sample class that you attended without your parents.
Bonus event: "Europe and the Global Battle of the Narratives"
Do you have an appetite for more? You are cordially invited to join this public lecture and roundtable discussion, hosted jointly by Leiden University College The Hague and the Europa Institute of Leiden Law School on the topic of “Europe and Geopolitics of Narrative”. Advanced signup is required. This event takes place directly after the experience day, from 17:00 - 19:00.
