Global rhetoric: an informal workshop on theories and practices of persuasion across cultures

How do people convince each other? Every day we are confronted with the rhetoric of Trump, Putin, and Meloni. Rhetoric, the art of speaking and persuading, is often considered an invention of the Greeks and Romans, courtesy of Aristotle and Cicero. The history of rhetoric is therefore mainly seen as primarily Western. In this workshop, we will explore theories and practices of persuasion in different cultures worldwide. The Leiden Faculty of Humanities is blessed with a large number of experts in persuasion techniques, from the Hebrew Bible to the Epic of Gilgamesh, from Seoul to Washington DC, and from Japan to Russia. On Friday 2 May between 1 and 5 p.m., we will learn from each other about the rhetorics of different world cultures; With this, we also explore possible collaborations in research and education. Everyone is welcome!
