Where does childhood end and adulthood begin? When can an individual be considered sexually mature or ready for marriage? And how do changing and often controversial conceptions of human – including children's – sexuality shape the relationship between childhood, adulthood, and power? Different cultures and societies throughout history have provided various answers to these questions. Only through a comparative exploration of different historical and cross-cultural perspectives can we better understand the complexities of how adulthood and sexual maturity have been, and continue to be, socially and culturally constructed. This is precisely the aim of the proposed interdisciplinary meeting.
