The EU has high ambitions in de coming years when it comes to competitiveness, decarbonization and defense. But these ambitions come with a big price tag. In this EU seminar we will discuss the European politics of debt and investment with Dutch politician and former president of the Eurogroup Working Group Hans Vijlbrief. Mr. Vijlbrief will share with us insights from a long career in the upper ranks of public finance and EU decision making.
About the speaker
Hans Vijlbrief (1963) has been a member of the Dutch House of Representatives since 2023 and is spokesperson for Finance, Social Affairs and Housing for D66. Mr. Vijlbrief served in the Dutch cabinet as State Secretary for Finance (2020-2022) and Extractive Industries (2022-2024). Before entering politics, Mr. Vijlbrief served in high-ranking positions at the Finance and Economic Affairs ministries for years. As a civil servant, Vijlbrief stood by the side of Dutch minister of Finance and Eurogroup President Jeroen Dijsselbloem during the Eurocrisis. Mr. Vijlbrief also presided over the Eurogroup Working Group (2018-2020), the advisory body to the Eurogroup.
