Student hosts Lucia van Kempen and Jurriaan Duijn

This year's symposium is hosted by Lucia van Kempen and Jurriaan Duijn. Lucia, master's student in Occupational Health Psychology, and Jurriaan, student in Public Administration and Planning, will bring the student perspective to life during the symposium. With their experience in the student well-being team, local politics and mentorship, they know what is going on among students and how the university can support them. For instance, they see that students increasingly need an environment that encourages connection.

Well-being market

Visit the well-being market this year too! Meet colleague from Student Support Services, ask questions about sports and nutrition, or get ergonomic advice from an occupational health doctor. In need of relaxation? Enjoy a chair massage, experience the silence corner or follow the mini-workshop ‘Draw your colleague’.

Workshop round 1

This workshop is in Dutch.

During this workshop, we will give you some tools to identify problematic substance use and how to talk to ‘Today's student’ about it. You will also receive information on referral options to Brijder Prevention or treatment services.

The wars in Gaza and Ukraine; every day and institutionalized racism; the ongoing legacies of colonialism- many of us experience how these and other conversation topics incidentally lead to hostile situations in society and sometimes even on campus.

In this workshop you will learn how to address sensitive topics with your students and bring the conversation to a more profound level by learning how to ask constructive questions.

Workshop round 2

In this workshop, we will explore the possibilities of building well-being through playing and implementing a diversity card game titled ‘What’s Your Story?’ Dr. Tingting Hui developed this card game to facilitate open conversations about diversity, inclusion and well-being among students and faculty members. Central to it are the concepts of storytelling and play: while storytelling has proven to be an effective diversity intervention in higher education, the format of play can enhance empathic listening and lay the foundations for critical intervention by creating a safe sharing space.

Self-reflection is a powerful way to connect with our inner patterns. Through reflecting on and expressing our feelings, thoughts, and behaviors we connect to ourselves and to others around us. Space to express oneself in a socially safe setting enhances self-awareness and can foster resilience. Within academia we mainly express ourselves through words (spoken and written). This workshop explores different, creative ways of expressing and offers a combination of experiential learning, information and examples (POPcorner and Honours College FSW) which you can use personally as well as professionally.

Panel discussion: challenges and insights

We’ll close the day with an interactive panel discussion featuring students and student support staff. Together, we’ll explore the biggest challenges faced by ‘Today's Students’ – from performance pressure and social media to mental health and generational differences. What can we learn from each other? How can we build an environment where students truly thrive?

Taking part in the panel discussion are student Léon Chiata from @Ease, student Claire van Megen from PraatErover, LUS Lecturer of the Year Pieter Slaman, and student psychologist Nienkje Jongejan

Alongside the keynotes, you will also be able to take part in interactive workshops on topical themes and will have plenty of time to share experiences with colleagues from other faculties or departments. You will leave at the end of the day with insights you can immediately apply to your work.
