Iconclass for Image Analysis Workshop
This is a hybrid event. To follow this workshop online, please register and you will receive a link a week before the workshop. Registration button at the end of this page.
Join us for an engaging workshop on Iconclass with our guests Hans Brandhorst and Etienne Posthumus, and Marika Keblusek from LUCAS. Iconclass is the world’s most widely used classification system for image content. Originally developed in Leiden by art historian Henri van de Waal, Iconclass has evolved into the AI-supported “Plus” Edition, unlocking new possibilities for image recognition and analysis.
The Iconclass Plus Edition features:
-
An enriched dataset of approximately 1 million indexed sample images;
-
An iconographic bibliography;
-
Deep links to primary iconographic sources and systems such as IMA, the Warburg Institute, and the Getty vocabularies;
-
AI-supported visual similarity search for enhanced image analysis.
We are also delighted to welcome Marika Keblusek, who will share how she intends to use Iconclass to study the circulation of images in early modern Europe—a research project recently awarded a Dutch Research Council (NWO) Open Competition (Large) grant.
This workshop offers valuable insights for collection managers, interested in Linked Open Data and IIIF, as well as researchers exploring digital methods for image analysis.
Participants are encouraged to bring their (research) projects and questions. Iconclass experts Hans Brandhorst and Etienne Posthumus will be available to offer guidance and support.
We look forward to welcoming you at the Digital Humanities Lab in Huizinga 0.09, Leiden University, or online.
If you work with many images in your research, then you'll want to register for this Iconclass workshop.
