The recent installation of Donald Trump’s second administration has generated a series of critical questions regarding how the new President will interact with Latin America. For instance, how will the announced policies against illegal immigration towards the United States affect the relations with Mexico and Central America? To what degree will the American policies towards the governments of Cuba, Venezuela, and Nicaragua be hardened? How serious can be considered the threat of regaining control over the Panama Canal by the US? Are the initial frictions with Colombia and Brazil in the face of the deportation of their nationals from the United States only of a temporal nature or do they represent the beginning of a deep readjustment of alliances in the region? What will be the impact of the announced protectionist policies on the Latin American economies? To what extent a fast alienation of the US vis-à-vis the Latin American countries could lead to the search for new economic and military alliances with China and other nations outside the Americas? Will Trump's victory lead to a marked strengthening of the extreme right in Latin America? These and other questions are crucial to understanding the political-ideological, commercial and social impact that the second Trump administration can have in the Latin American region and the possible reactions from the Latin American leaders.
Professor Patricio Silva will conduct a prospective analysis of the possible scenarios in this new chapter on the US-Latin American relations. For this purpose, he will pay attention to what has been until now the US policies towards the region as well as to the initial measures taken by the second Trump administration that have direct repercussions for Latin America.
