South Korea is facing considerable political turbulence following an unexpected declaration of martial law by President Yoon Seok-yeol, who is now impeached and under arrest. The decree and subsequent political fallout carry serious implications for the country’s governance and stability.

Join us on Tuesday, February 11, for an event exploring the evolving political landscape in South Korea. Our speaker, Dr. Steven Denney, will describe recent events and situate them within the broader political and historical context. Dr. Denney, an assistant professor of International Relations and Korean Studies, researches the politics and society of Korea and East Asia. The event will interest those wanting to understand recent events and their implications for Korea and the broader region.

The discussion will address key questions, including: Why did President Yoon declare martial law? What were the political conditions surrounding the declaration, and how have subsequent events shaped the domestic political landscape? What are the implications for the future of South Korea’s democracy and its role on the global stage?
