Constitutional law’s primary purpose is to direct and constrain the state. But achieving this goal also depends on ordinary people. Effective constitutional orders are characterized by shared expectations that certain values will be upheld and that transgressions of constitutional boundaries by officeholders will carry political consequences. Yet such shared expectations require people to back the constitutional order; have a common understanding of what the constitution demands and a willingness to defend the constitution if necessary.

In the workshop "Citizen-centered Constitutional Law" we will focus on the role that ordinary people play in effectuating constitutional law and we will seek to understand how ordinary people understand, interpret, and defend the constitution.

The program will be structured around two main sessions:

13:15-14:45 hrs. Citizen-centered Constitutional Law – Opening Adam Chilton will open this session with a short keynote discussing the impact of citizen engagement on constitutional law. This will be followed by a presentation by Wim VoermansMila Versteeg, and Jaroslaw Kantorowicz on their recent KNAW Thorbecke project titled "Citizen-centered Constitutional Law". A general discussion on the topic will conclude this session.
14:45-15:00 hrs. Coffee break
15:00-16:00 hrs. Citizen-centered Constitutional Law – Pre-analysis plans
