RegisterThe Institute of Security and Global Affairs (ISGA) is hosting an English-language event to mark the publication of Lifting the Fog: The Secret History of the Dutch Defense Intelligence and Security Service (1912-2022) by Professor Bob de Graaff. This book offers a unique exploration of over a century of developments within the Dutch Defence Intelligence and Security Service (MIVD), combining historical analysis with compelling case studies. The book is available in both English and Dutch.
On the occasion of this publication, ISGA researchers Constant Hijzen and Eva Michaels will engage in a conversation with Professor de Graaff about the book and notable developments in Dutch intelligence. The discussion will not only cover key moments in the history of the MIVD but also reflect on Professor de Graaff’s involvement in the NIOD commission of inquiry (1996-2022) into intelligence and policy failures surrounding the fall of Srebrenica. Lessons learned from this period, and their relevance to today’s security challenges, will form a central part of the conversation.
About the book
Lifting the Fog: The Secret History of the Dutch Defense Intelligence and Security Service (1912-2022) is unique as a general body of knowledge about the history of the Dutch intelligence and security services since 1913. The chapters alternate between a general historical overview and a number of case studies spread out over the more-than-a-century long history that taken together give a good insight into the main functions of a middle-size military intelligence service as The Netherlands has known. The MIVD is giving the author access to the archives of the MIVD and its predecessors, which normally are closed to outsiders.
