In 2021, the EU launched its Global Gateway strategy with the ambition to open a new chapter in its partnership with developing countries. With a commitment of up to €300 billion in investments from 2021 to 2027, the initiative aims to support sustainable, high-quality projects that respond to the needs of partner countries, particularly in Africa where geopolitical competition is especially rife. Its aim to pursue competitive opportunities for European businesses while still ensuring lasting benefits for local communities makes EU GGS a departure from the more traditional development policy. In this talk, Peter Kiss from the European Commission’s DG INTPA will explore how the Global Gateway is advancing EU-Africa cooperation in a new geopolitical landscape, discuss some of its challenges and success stories so far, and offer insights into what implementing this vision looks like in practice, day by day.
