Why this award?
After a successful first edition, the Leiden Leadership Centre (LLC) of Leiden University is again presenting the LLC thesis prize. With this award, we want to promote knowledge development in the field of leadership and further encourage young talent and diverse leadership research.
The LLC wants to promote knowledge about public leadership and contribute to leadership development, both in science and in practice. We do this by conducting our own research and teaching professionals and students, but also by sharing our knowledge in various knowledge networks. With the LLC thesis prize 2024, we encourage knowledge sharing around leadership. We offer innovative theses a stage, make the research results more widely known, reward the authors and enthuse them to do more with their research.
Who can apply?
You can nominate for the LLC thesis award if you are a (former) student of Leiden University and have written a bachelor or master's thesis on a current leadership issue in academic year 2023-2024 and it has been assessed with a grade of 7.5 or higher. The thesis should address leadership or leadership behaviour. This can be from different disciplines and perspectives and is therefore not tied to a specific programme or faculty.

A jury of leadership professionals from practice and science will select from the submitted theses and make a shortlist on this basis. The winners will be announced during the Public Leadership with Perspective conference on 22 October.
The winner of the CAOP thesis award will receive a €150 dinner voucher. The winner will also be offered a leadership mentoring day with a public leader from the field. And goes home with the Leiden Leadership Centre Thesis Award 2024 trophy! The numbers two and three will also be awarded a dinner voucher of €75 and €50 respectively. We will also publish the prize winners' theses on our website.
The conference where the award ceremony takes place is free of charge for candidates of the LLC Thesis Prize. The spoken language of this event is Dutch but the LLC thesis prize ceremony can be given in English. You can read more information on the conference website.
The winner of the LLC Thesis Award 2023
Floortje Fontein has won the inaugural Leiden Leadership Centre Thesis Award. Her thesis ‘Inclusive leadership in politicised organisational environments: The mediating roles of centralisation and formalisation’ looks at the organisational factors affecting inclusive leadership and offers managers practical tools to promote inclusive leadership. Floortje spent a day with municipal secretary Pim van Vliet of the municipality of Leiden, and she received an insight into the working day of a public sector leader and good tips for starting her career and develop her personal leadership style.
