Summary

The evolution of technology and digitization has led to the proliferation of art reproductions. However, 3D printing distinguishes itself from past and present methods due to its unparalleled ability to faithfully replicate, modify, and alter all material characteristics of a painting, including three-dimensionality. Indistinguishable Likeness delves into how the original and its 3D-printed twin challenge the Western focus on the materially unique artwork. By employing an interdisciplinary approach that integrates technical art history, 3D printing, contemporary museum and conservation studies, philosophy, cognitive psychology, neuroscience, and ethics, and through the analysis of several case studies, the study demonstrates how 3D-printed reproductions offer fresh perspectives on original artworks, enrich our comprehension of art history, and diversify the public engagement with art.
