Samenvatting

Through the combination of literature review, grey correlation and forecasting models, system dynamics, and ex-ante LCA approaches, our results suggest that the capabilities of IoT could yield substantial environmental benefits in logistical supply chains. Despite the challenges with regard to the need for coordination across supply chain nodes to establish safe, reliable, and unified data standards, both large companies and Small and Medium-sized Enterprises (SMEs) hence can benefit from investments in IoT technology.

IoT systems should embody the characteristics of being
smart, sustainable, and safe. A smart IoT system should optimize logistics operations as effectively as possible today, and have more advanced analytic capabilities to predict demand within a dynamic market. A sustainable IoT system necessitates the selection of low environmental impact materials in IoT hardware and efficient algorithms that reduce energy consumption. A safe IoT system requires decentralized topologies to minimize the damage of cyberattacks. Safety can also be enhanced if policymakers implement data protection laws, establish cybersecurity standards, and promote data encryption and anonymization. Overall, with new low-impact materials becoming suitable for use in RFIDs and other IoT systems, and smarter algorithms being applied, the advantages of IoT-enabled supply chains over conventional supply chains are only likely to grow.
