The LUCAS PhD Council is thrilled to invite you to the 2nd LUCAS PhD Symposium “Research in Progress” on November 21, 2024.
This symposium will provide an excellent opportunity for our PhD candidates to present their research to their peers and engage in a thought-provoking discussion regarding their work-in-progress. This symposium is very much geared to bring light to developing investigations. It's an opportunity to learn from and support one another.
After the symposium, we will have post-symposium drinks, where attendees can mingle and continue the conversation with their colleagues.
Participants that submit a paper will be divided into three-person panels with presenters with similar topics and/or methods. Presentations should be no longer than 15 minutes. Each three-person panel will be followed by a 15-minute Q&A session. It is also possible to propose a full three-person panel together with other participants.
Submit your proposal as a single PDF file to phdcouncillucas@hum.leidenuniv.nl by October 18, 2024. Please include “2nd LUCAS PhD Symposium Abstract Submission” in the email heading. Applicants will be notified about the success of their application in the following weeks.
The PhD symposium “Research in Progress” has no specific thematic focus, because it wants to offer all early career scholars the opportunity to present their ongoing research. The organization will however strive to divide participants into panels with presentations that have similar topics and/or methods. Examples of such panels could include, but are certainly not limited to: “Characterization and Representation”, “Crossing Mediums”, “Exploring Material(ity)”, Hidden Identities”, and “Revisiting Myths”.
To propose an individual paper, please provide the title of your paper and an abstract (max. 200 words, saved as PDF). We also ask you to:
•provide 3 keywords that correspond to your research;
•specify if your research falls into any of the exemplary panel themes suggested above (or suggest your own panel title if you like);
•ensure that the document containing your title and abstract is anonymous and does not have any identifiable information embedded in it.
To propose a three-person panel, please provide the title of the panel and the individual papers that will be part of it and an abstract (max. 450 words, saved as PDF). We also ask you to:
• provide three keywords that correspond to your panel;
• include information regarding changes to the format and any subsequent requirements in your email if you want to experiment with alternative forms of presentation (i.e. combining three speeches into one, or an open form discussion panel);
• ensure that the document containing your panel title, paper titles and abstract is anonymous and does not have any identifiable information embedded in it.
The LUCAS PhD Council encourages all faculty members, researchers, and students with an interest in the fields of humanities and social sciences to attend this symposium.
